In-person and online piano lessons from the heart of Philadelphia

About music lessons with Zach Zaitlin

"Zach is a natural teacher. He is kind, patient, caring, and balanced...what stands out to me each week...is his encouragement, connection with the kids and his genuine care for their success as learners."

-- Cathlyn, schoolteacher, and mom of two elementary-age     piano students

"I'm an adult returning to the piano after a long absence and Zach was exactly the piano teacher I needed- he kept me on target, taught me things I hadn't realized I needed to know, was extraordinarily patient and always pushed me to do my best."
-- Martin, adult student

Combining the best of the classical tradition with the latest research on how we learn music, pianist, composer, and vocalist Zach Zaitlin (BA - Music, Swarthmore College, 2006; member, Music Teachers National Association and Pennsylvania Music Teachers Association) gives students the skills and understandings they need to be confident, fluent, and expressive musicians, whatever musical path they pursue.

Zach, whose studio is located in the Point Breeze/Graduate Hospital area of central Philadelphia, firmly believes that there is a musician in everyone -- that everyone has the ability and the right to make music -- and that by structuring and sequencing instruction appropriately, that musician can be brought out of the student. Zach, who also currently serves as as Assistant Choir Director and Accompanist at Friends' Central School and who has worked as a piano instructor at Swarthmore College, brings a friendly attitude and over 14 years of experience as a teacher to his work, along with a background as a performing singer-songwriter and classical pianist and vocalist.

Through a rich variety of performance repertoire, technical guidance, and mindfully curated "off-bench" activities, Zach instills in his students the ability to think musically and to play with understanding (a skill known as audiation), which empowers students to play in a relaxed, confident, and musical way, building a foundation for successful reading of music, an intuitive grasp of music theory, and the freedom to play by ear and collaborate with others. Zach also guides his students through fun age- and level-appropriate improvisation at every stage of the learning process, a key component in students building ownership and comfort with the musical concepts being explored.

Through traditional one-on-one lessons or dynamic group instruction, Zach hopes to inspire in students a lifelong love of music while cultivating character, confidence, and self-discipline. Students also benefit from fun and enriching performance opportunities and group music "Play Dates", both formal and informal, throughout the year.
